LAS CRUCES – El Paso Electric said nearly 14,000 customers in Las Cruces were affected by a power outage Monday afternoon. El Paso Electric Spokesperson George De La Torre said the company is still investigating what led to the nearly hour-long outage. De La Torre said the outage was reported at 4:42 p.m. An outage map showed 13,700 customers in the Mesilla Valley, most of them west of Telshor Boulevard, were without power. For most of the customers, power was restored at 5:19 p.m., De La Torre said. For others, power went on for about a minute and then back out. Power was restored to all customers at 5:35 p.m. De La Torre said the intermittent outage was due to the “order of the way breakers needed to be closed.” In response to a Las Cruces Sun-News Facebook post, readers reported outages in most areas of town. The lights went out at Mesilla Valley Mall and streetlights stopped working along Lohman and Amador avenues, readers said. Becky VanValkenburg reported, “Power went out while I was in line waiting at Whataburger and they gave me my meal for free.” Freddie Alvardo replied to VanValkenburg’s post, stating “McDonald’s didn’t give me my food because ‘the system was down’ because of the power.” The Sun-News could not independently verify those reports. De La Torre said El Paso Electric would release information about the cause of the outage when its investigation is complete.
