A total of 4,767 residents and businesses in the city are without power according to Eversource. The areas affected go from Allen Street to Sixteen Acres, said Ryan Walsh, Springfield Police spokesman. The outage started shortly before 7 p.m. when a substation for a transformer malfunctioned, Springfield Fire Capt. Brian Tetreault said. The fire department is on the scene of the substation at 1215 Wilbraham Road and Eversource employees have also responded and are working to fix the problem, he said. The fire causes lines to get overloaded and switch off like a circuit breaker, said an Eversouce spokeswoman. Eversource officials said they are making repairs on the equipment and power should be restored to residents and businesses between 9 and 10 p.m. There are a number of traffic lights which are not working due to the outage. Springfield Police are directing traffic at difficult intersections and the Department of Public Works is placing temporary stop signs at those intersections, Walsh said. "Please drive carefully," he said.
